Signal, the private messenger app has oficially announced on Monday that the platform is now accepting donations with cryptycurrencies like Bitcoin, as a form of supporting the Signal Technology Foundation which is the non-profit organization that developed the Signal app.
Signal wrote “As a nonprofit organization, we depend on your support. If you’ve been patiently waiting for Signal to accept cryptocurrency donations, you no longer need to hodl back your generosity,”
You can now donate cryptocurrency on Donate section on it’s official website, saying that the feature is made possible via The Giving Block, which is a major crypto donation platform.They accept 12 donations by 12 cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Stablecoin, Bitcoin Cash, ZCash, Basic Attention Token, Gemini Dollar and even Chailink.You can also donate as anonymous.
The Signal Technology Foundation was launched back in february 2018 by Brian Acton which is the co-founder of WhatsApp which left both WhatsApp and Facebook in 2017 to create Signal.
In January 2021, Elon Musk supported the Signal app in a tweet where he said “Use Signal”, right after WhatsApp announced a big change to it’s privacy terms.WhatsApp is now focing users to share their personal data with Facebook , their parent company, for advertising purposes.
After Elon Musk’s tweet, Signal app saw a surge in popularity by up to 5,900%, which made Signal the most downloaded app in both Apple and Google app stores, while WhatsApp lost more than -19% in popularity in the same period.
At the same time Telegram had a 190% increase in downloads.
At the same time, Facebook has an entire departmend dedicated to finding out why Telegram is so popular, said Dúrov in an statement on his official Telegram channel.
